Director of the Afghan Women’s Fund, Fahima Gaheez grew up in Afghanistan and from an early age has been involved with the women’s rights movement in that country. Afghanistan has been at war for half a century. The USSR invaded in 1979, which led to civil war, followed by the 20-year U.S. occupation. Fifty years of unrest, violence and war has devastated the country and the fabric of her society. The women of Afghanistan have suffered tremendously. Fahima will describe the devastations, the obstacles, the challenges, and the resistance of the Afghan women. She will also describe the work that the Afghan Women’s Fund is doing in Afghanistan.
