Dr. Braxton Mitchell: From Tradition to Discovery, What the Amish Can Teach Us

University of Maryland School of Medicine professor and genetic epidemiologist Dr. Braxton Mitchell has spent nearly three decades studying health and disease in the Amish population, a unique community that has yielded transformative insights into the genetic and environmental determinants of conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and aging. Dr. Mitchell’s work has broad relevance for improving the health of the general population. In this talk, he will introduce the Amish community, explain what makes it such a powerful population for scientific discovery, and highlight major findings from his research.
