Earl Martin, Deborah and Philip English curator of decorative arts, design, and material culture at the Walters Art Museum, will explore the vibrant and expanding world of art ceramics in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. Martin will focus on ceramics made by Théodore Deck and decorated by various painters under his employ. He will also discuss artistic wares produced by the Paris studio of Haviland & Co. Today the Haviland studio is better known for the porcelain dinnerware it imported from France to the US, which was popular with a broad swath of middle-class consumers. In late 2023, examples of the beautiful ceramics produced by both of these firms will go on view in a new installation at the Walters.
